The
PILARw is an integrated gunshot detection system designed and manufactured
by the French Defence Company ACOEM through its METRAVIB brand. Conflicts
are becoming increasingly complex and armed forces must face threats
and environments that are more varied than ever. Throughout the world,
METRAVIB provides armed forces with solutions to protect national military
areas or military troops deployed on the modern battlefield. PILARw
uses the sound waves generated by the firing of small arms, Rocket Propelled
Grenades (RPGs), mortars and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to
detect and accurately identify their location in real time. The Ground
and Vehicular Versions of PILARw are type classified by the U.S. Army
Special Operations COMmand (USSOCOM) as the M1 & M2 reference number
in the GDS category (Gunshot Detection Systems). |

description |
The PILARw
system uses the sound waves generated by the firing of small
arms, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), mortars and Improvised
Explosive Devices (IEDs) to detect and accurately identify
their location in real time. The PILARw screen displays the
precise origin of the enemy fire in 3D. For dismounted operation,
the system can also be configured to operate with PDA controller.
PILARw fixed station device locates the origin of the shot
within ±2° in bearing and a typical ±20%
in range. The maximum detection range can extend beyond 1,500m.
The system provides a broad coverage of weapon’s acoustic
sources, detecting and processing both subsonic and supersonic
signals generated by 5.56 through 20mm caliber shots with
or without silencer as well as RPGs, mortars and anti-tank
missile. Target’s azimuth, elevation and range are generated
within two seconds after the detection of the event.

Components |
| The
PILARw system is made up of three principal components, which
can be combined to create different configurations according
to the technical features required:
• A folding acoustic antenna with embedded sensors and
electronics. The ground version of the PILARw is mounted on
a tripod which can be deployed quickly on the field.
• A data acquisition and interface module to process the
signal transmitted by the antenna(s)
• A ruggedized display in the form of a laptop computer,
PDA, or Battle Management System, in order to operate the system
and view results using PILARw's SHOTGUARD software and MMI (Man/Machine
Interface).

use |
During
conflicts and peacekeeping missions, armed forces must ensure
that temporary and permanent military bases or sensitive buildings
are protected. In today's asymmetric conflicts, and particularly
in urban environments, a potential threat can come from anywhere.
Therefore there is an increasing need for effective detection
systems.
The PILARw system ground version uses the sound waves generated
by the firing of small arms, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs),
mortars and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) to detect and
accurately identify their location in real time.
This data allows to protect personnel and equipment, and to
mount an immediate and appropriate response. These systems serve
a providing a deterrent effect and are conferring reassurance
for the troops, who knows that they are protected in the event
of an attack. The data collected can also be used during post-assignment
debriefings to indicate danger zones and to serve as evidence.
