The
PEARL (Personal Equipment Add-on for Reactive Localization) is a dedicated
and cost effective gunshot detection and localization system developed,
designed and manufactured by the French Defence Company ACOEM through
its METRAVIB brand. French Company Metravib has presented during Eurosatory
2012 (Defence Exjobition in Paris, France) for the first time its new
and compact acoustic gunshot detection and localization system PEARL
for small and medium supersonic calibers. The PEARL is the 'mini' version
of the PILARw
vehicle and ground gunshot detection system. The system is considered
as add-on equipment for individual weapon as assault rifle, sniper gun,
vehicle-mounted machine gun/crew served weapon station, GPMG (General
Purpose Machine Gun) and AGL (Automatic and grenades launcher). PEARL
can be used for multiple missions and applications: situational awareness,
FOB and Forces Protection, reconnaissance, border surveillance, counter
sniping operations, convoy protection and classical maneuvers. With
PEARL mounted on weapon, the reaction time is dramatically reduced and
survivability is increased.
The PEARL
gunshot system detection consists of three main components,
acoustic sensor, visual LED interface and mounting system.
The small Acoustic Sensor Array (ASA) is equipped with enhanced
microphones, embedded electronics and protected by a design
and robust wind/rain cap housing. The visual interface composed
of a simple LED Display (with five LEDs to indicate the shot
direction in Azimuth and Elevation) and three control button
(On/Off, Day/Night and Next Shot/Reset). Acoustic sensor and
visual LED display are mounted on customized mount which is
Picatinny rail compatible (1H, 3H and 9H). The PEARL is powered
by two normal 1.5 AA batteries (good for 12 hrs.) the weight
is less than 400g (incl. batteries).
Combat
use
Green and red LED lights shows the soldier where the shoot come
from, the location accuracy is +/- 10° for azimuth and elevation
with a maximum detection range of 1,000 m depending on caliber.
Usage is very simple: when a shooting occurs, LEDs are activated
to indicate the direction of shooting: up-down / right-left.
Rest to follow directions and the LED turns green when the barrel
reached the right direction.
The PEARL system does not react to outgoing fire within 10 meters.
There is the option of an external output to displays (multifunction
goggles, sights, etc.).
Rest
to follow directions and the LED turns green when the barrel
reached the right direction.

About
Acoem (Metravib)
Through
its METRAVIB brand, ACOEM offers high-performance
threat surveillance, detection and localization solutions
for the defense and civil protection sectors.
The systems developed by METRAVIB use the sound waves
generated by the firing of small arms, grenades (RPGs),
mortars and explosive devices (IEDs) to detect and
accurately identify their location in real time.
