|
|
The FENNEK family of vehicles is the answer to various requirement profiles: they are characterizedby outstanding and almost silent mobilityin any terrain, the most modern sensor systems, extensive protection, self-defense capabilities andhigh autonomy. The three-man crew – driver, commander and radio operator/observer – can operate autonomously for five days. Equipment, operating materials, drinking water and food are carried in the vehicle. Air transportable in the C-130, the FENNEK can be moved quickly and easily even to distant areas of deployment.
Mobility
The outstanding mobility of the FENNEK in open terrain and on roads – with a range of almost 1000 kilometers – is due to its state-of-the-art engine technology. The engine is supplemented by automatic transmission and a transfer unit. The selectable all-wheel drive operates via an H-layout of the drive train enabling a low design. Together with the low center of gravity and the broad track width this assures high mobility also in rough terrains. With a total weight of up to eleven tons, the FENNEK easily negotiates 60% forward slopes and 35% side slopes. It has a turning circle of less than 13 meters and can ford water more than a meter deep. The automatic tire inflation system allows for continuous adaption of the vehicle to all terrain conditions. The FENNEK also has a cable winch with a traction force of ten tons, to recover itself or another vehicle.
Protection
The FENNEK offers protection from hand-held weapons up to calibre 7.62 mm AP (Dragunov) according to STANAG 4569, level 3 and from mines up to level 2 A. Exchangeable add-on armor modules make it possible to increase the protection level. NBC protection in conjunction with a compartment cooling system protects the crew inside the vehicle from contamination. A fire detection system located in the engine compartment gives the crew an acoustic fire warning. A fire extinguishing system can be easily integrated. The FENNEK can also be concealed from the enemy by using the integrated smoke screen system.
Driver’s station
Thanks to the layout of the windscreen and side windows, and the centrally positioned driver’s seat, the driver has a field of view greater than 180°. The rear view camera and the monitor integrated in the instrument panel support rapid evasive manoeuvres and precise reverse driving. Night vision goggles facilitate secure manoeuvring for the driver at night. The radio operator’s/ observer’s seat can be rotated 180° to be able to cover the rear. A height-adjustable seat allows the commander to observe the enemy safely out of his hatch. By using the fast-drop function he can withdraw into the crew compartment within a few seconds.
RECONNAISSANCE VEHICLE
Its mission: to see and not to be seen
The basic variant of the FENNEK family of vehicles is a reconnaissance vehicle. Outstandingly well camouflaged thanks to its low height, the limited IR, the radar signature, the low-noise engine, and equipped with state-of-the-art reconnaissance devices, this variant of the FENNEK optimally satisfies the requirements for reconnaissance missions even far behind enemy lines. In modern operation scenarios of the 21st century its missions involve not only observing enemy troop movements but especially monitoring embattled localities or terrain in order to observe, report and check out any suspicious activities close in time to when they occur.
The FENNEK’s high reconnaissance capabilities are ensured by its observation and reconnaissance equipment (BAA). A thermal imager, CCD day-vision camera and laser range finder are integrated in a sensor head extendable up to a height of 3.3 meters. They can be controlled in azimuth and elevation via a swivel-tilt head, and also be used in remote operation set up on a tripod up to 40 meters from the vehicle while being controlled from within it via cables. The reconnaissance equipment allows targets to be detected and identified during day and night at great distances.
Reconnaissance is supported by a hybrid navigation system that allows the vehicle position and north to be determined with high accuracy both via a global positioning system (GPS) and an inertialunit (IRE). With the integrated laser range finder of the BAA the positional coordinates of detected objects are defined, to be processed and automatically transmitted to a digital map. German troops make use of a battlefield management system (FüWES) for this purpose. Universal interfaces easily allow the use of alternative country-specific hardware and software. Other systems carried on board such as ground sensor equipment (BSA), a radiation detection system, and in the future a mini UAV (Aladin) or the remote-controlled mobile sensor system (MoSeS) significantly improve the FENNEK’s reconnaissance capabilities.
Communication
HF and VHF radios are used to communicate with other vehicles and troop sections and a smooth exchange of information is assured, while maintaining high security. This information superiority combined with technical strength is particularly vital in today’s increasingly opaque conflicts.
Mount and weapons
For self-protection, the FENNEK is equipped with a mount operated under armor and NBC protection. It has day and night vision capability and allows for 360° observation. The mounts can be equipped with a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, a calibre 7.62 machine gun or with a calibre .50 machine gun.
Further Variants
Joint fire support team
The joint fire support team (JFST) variant is currently under development for the German armed forces. Each team consists of an artillery observer and a forward air controller (FAC) or a tactical air control party (TACP) as planned for the Dutch forces. The JFST is equipped with an extraordinary high-performance BAA with a high identification range.
Artillery observer
The artillery observer proved its efficiency in deployment as the first one of the FENNEK family. The German Bundeswehr has been using it with great success since 2004 in the ISAF in Afghanistan. Its characteristic feature is an enhanced-performance navigation unit that allows extraordinary high target location accuracy in azimuth and elevation, also under remote operation. The target information obtained in this way as well as the target position are passed on via the ADLER II’s artillery guidance system to the fire support officer. Strike control and corrections are performed by the ADLER II artillery battlefield management system in the FENNEK. The artillery observer also has a digital map module for positional display and orientation in open terrain. An outstanding feature is the additional voice and data radio link to the air force and navy. A laser designator that can be adapted to the observation equipment additionally can commit targets for the air force and guide laser-controlled missiles to their target.
Command and operations vehicle
The command and function variant, in the Dutch forces called AD (general services), is a vehicle with universal deployment possibilities. Instead of the observation and reconnaissance equipment it has a material stowage space which can be used in various missions. German and Dutch pioneers have been using the first vehicles of this variant since 2005.
MRAT
In the Dutch MRAT (medium-range anti-tank) variant, this space is designated for transporting three guided missiles. Another two missiles and the launching rack frame are carried in the crew compartment for quick deployment.
SWP
For the Dutch armed forces, the FENNEK is equipped with a Stinger weapon platform, a device for firing four Stinger missiles for mid-range air defense. The SWP can be operated independently from the FENNEK vehicle or by remote control as part of ground-based air defense.

Yes, you are right. The E1 has the Shturm turret, while the U has the Shkval turret. My mistake, thanks for the correction. _________________ "What is best in life?"

AGRAB 120mm MORTAR on RG 31
UAE Buys 48 Scorpions
By ADNAN ABDEL-RAZZAK, ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates has ordered 48 Agrab (Scorpion) mobile mortars worth 390 million dirham ($106 million) from local manufacturer International Golden Group (IGG).
UAE officials announced the deal Feb. 19, leaving out the number of units, which was provided by an IGG spokesman.
The 120 mm mobile mortar is a joint effort between companies from Britain, Singapore, South Africa, and the UAE.
Mounted on a 4x4 armored utility vehicle, the Scorpion can fire high- explosive, improved conventional, conventional, infrared illumination, and smoke-screen rounds.
