| Quote: | | The Armbrust is known to have seen combat twice. The first time in the 1980s in Cambodia against tanks of the Vietnam Army. The were believed to have been supplied to the Cambodians opposed to the Vietnam incursion by Singapore at the behest of China. The use of Armbruster in Cambodia was done secretly. The second time was during the early months of the break up of Yugoslavia. When the Serbian leadership sent armored columns into Slovenia, they were ambushed by Slovenian militia forces equipped with Armbrusts. This came as total shock to the Serbian forces. Unlike Cambodia, the combat use of the Armbruster by Slovenia was recorded by the news media. Since other Singapore weapons were seen by the news media with the Slovenian milita it also thought that Singapore had secretly sold them to Slovenia before the break up of Yugoslavia. |
| Quote: | | The Armbrust (ie German for CROSSBOW) is the most unique ultra-short range individual antitank weapon in history. Unlike most (with the exception of hand thrown and rifle grenades) individual infantry antitank weapons, the Armbruster allows the user not only the ability to fire in an enclosed space (eg a bunker, building room, vehicle) but also when he fires is position is not revealed, unlike other infantry antitank weapons. Yes, there are individual antitank/assault weapons that can be used in enclosed spaces. But until the Armbrust none that can be used in enclosed spaces with for all practical purposes no launch signature. As one German soldier of WW2 wrote about the Panzerfaust. "The firing of the Panzerfaust resulted usually in the destruction of a Russian tank, soon followed by the death of the German soldier." There is no recoil, no flash and a sound report similar to a pistol shot. When the Armbrust is fired, the antitank projectile is expelled to the front and harmless sections of plastic are expelled to the rear of the launcher. This is accomplished by having a heavy cylinder, that contains the antitank projectile and the plastic sections. In between the projectile and plastic is located two pistons and a propellant ejection charge. On firing the two pistons contain the ejection charge gases when the projectile and plastic is expelled. The Armbrust is one of the few -- ie and there are very few -- recoiless antitank weapons that can be fired without ear protection. |
