SISU GTP 4x4 APC

Modular wheeled armored vehicle personnel carrier Finland

The GTP 4x4 is new modular wheeled armored vehicle designed and developed by the Finnish Company trucks manufacturer SISU. The vehicle was introduced by the Company in April 2018. The vehicle has been developed to respond to new request of military forces with a new 4x4 armored vehicle offering high level of protection and mobility. The crew survivability of the SISU 4x4 GTP is based on the experience and expertise of SISU Company to produce 8x8 armored trucks that are field proven, serving currently in UN led operation in Lebanon, and already earlier in NATO led operation in Afghanistan. The SISU GTP 4x4 is based on two main components, the backbone and the crew body. With this design the vehicle can be easily configured in many variants for different operational uses. The modular concept with interchangeable components and easy maintenance are key factors in the development of the vehicle by SISU to offer Life Cycle Support economy. In November 2018, it was announced that the Latvian ministry of Defense has selected the GTP 4x4 of the Finnish company SISU Auto in a €200 million-armored vehicle procurement competition.

SISU GTP 4x4 variants:

Due to its modular design, the SISU GTP 4x4 can be configured to perform different types of missions. The vehicle is available in APC (Armored Personnel Carrier), recovery, reconnaissance and medical evacuation variants.

- SISU GTP 4x4 APC: It can accommodate 10 military personnel including driver and commander
- SISU GTP 4x4 recovery: A single cab for two people is mounted at the front of the vehicle, the rear is equipped with a crane and an open cargo area.
- SISU GTP 4x4 ambulance: Single cab at the front. The rear compartment has been raised to increase internal layout, equipped with medical equipment and transport injured troops on the battlefield.
- SISU GTP 4x4 Reconnaissance: There is a double cab at the front of the vehicle with two doors on each side and flatbed cargo area at the rear.

Armament

In the standard configuration of the SISU GTP 4x4, there is no specific armament mounted on the vehicle but there is one single hatch on the roof that can be equipped with a circular ring mount which can be armed with a machine gun up to 12.7mm caliber. As with all modern combat vehicles, the SISU GTP can be fitted with a remotely operated weapon station allowing the gunner to aim and operate the weapon under the armor of the vehicle.

Design and protection

The SISU GTP 4x4 is divided into two main components the backbone and crew body. The backbone integrates the engine mounted at the front, the wheel components, and a modular platform in the middle which is used to integrate the crew body. The backbone is used for all configurations of the vehicle. The SISU Backbone platform forms the robust base for the SISU 4x4 GTP allowing easier maintenance and reliable protection regardless of the vehicle configuration. The SISU Crew Body provides standard ballistic and mine blast protection Level 1 STANAG 4569, firing of small arms 7.62mm caliber and artillery shell splinters. The SISU 4x4 GTP can be protected according to operation specific requirements. Due to the modular structure, the armor level can be increased with an additional add-on armor kit or replacement components offering protection against RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) threats. The vehicle has a crew of two and can accommodate 8 infantrymen at the rear. There are two large bulletproof windows at the front of the crew cab and one single door on each side. There is one more door located at the rear of the troop’s compartment allowing the soldiers to leave and enter in the vehicle. The SISU 4x4 GTP has a gross weight of 14,000 kg with a maximum payload of 4,500 kg. It has a length of 6 m, a height of 2.55 m, and a width of 2.5 m.

Mobility

The SISU GTP 4x4 is based on two axles with independent suspension. With its independent suspension system and differential locks in each wheel, the all-wheel drive of the SISU GTP is designed to be mobile beyond the paved roads, in severe off-road conditions, and wherever the operation takes its place. It is motorized with a six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 700 km. The SISU GTP 4x4 is not amphibious but it can cross water obstacles with a maximum depth of 850mm. It has an approach angle of 60 degrees, a departure angle of 45 degrees, and can climb a gradient of 60%.

Accessories

Standard equipment of the SISU GTP 4x4 includes pneumatic disc brakes with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and a 24V auxiliary electrical power system. In option, the vehicle can be fitted with a central tire inflation system (CTIS).
