Iran is one of the few world countries manufacturing advanced weapons and military equipment, a senior military official said on Saturday, February 1, 2014. “Iran imported nearly all its military hardware from abroad before the victory of the Islamic Revolution, but today it is a manufacturer of advanced military hardware in the world,” Head of the Army's Ideological and Political Organization Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem said.

Every year, during military parade, Iran shows new military equipment produces locally as the new Raad air defense system.

Standing firm in 8 years of resistance (1980-88 Iran-Iraq war) against the arrogant powers which backed up Saddam's army in its invasion of Iran, ending the interference of foreign military experts, manufacturing strategic military products such as various kinds of missiles, warships, airplanes and drones and gaining access to electronic warfare are only a few of the achievements resulted from Iran’s Islamic Revolution, he added.

Tehran launched an arms development program during the 1980-88 Iraqi imposed war on Iran to compensate for a US weapons embargo. Since then Iran has taken wide strides in designing and manufacturing different types of light, semi-heavy and heavy weapons, military tools and equipment. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles and fighter planes.

Two years ago military officials stated that the country has now reached self-sufficiency in producing radar systems in different frequencies and for various ranges.

Yet, Tehran has always stressed that the country's military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other nation.
