The Centauro VBM Explorer is one of the Special Version of the famous VBM Freccia 8x8 armoured infantry fighting vehicle currently deployed in Afghanistan. The vehicle is based on the chassis of the Centauro 8x8 armoured vehicle which is in service with the Italian army in many variants.

The Centauro VBM Explorer combines the proven and highly reliable drive train of the Centauro family with an especially designed hull to ensure maximum crew survivability.

The Centauro VBM Explorer is especially designed to perform reconnaissance missions. It features the integration of the Janus Panoramic Sight, the Horus UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) launcher mounted to the left side of the Hitfist 25mm combat turret and one TRP2 UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) stored inside the vehicle, at the rear of the hull.

The Janus is a high performance, stabilised, multi sensor designed to deliver combined medium and long-range panoramic sight, day/night, all-weather in rugged, self contained, compact package.

The HITFIST® is a two-man power operated turret incorporating the Iatest technologies in the fields of electronics, protection, signature and Man Machine Interface (MMI). The main armament consists of an automatic cannon, 25mm or 3Omm, electrically controlled for elevation, traversing and firing operations; feeding is through belted rounds housed in two ammunition containers. Second armament conists of one 7,62mm coaxial machine gun, a 7,62mm machine gun pintle mounted and a set of Smoke Grenade Launchers (option).

The HORUS is a small aerial robotic platform equipped with an optical sensor to carry out surveillance and tactical reconnaissance tasks and missions.

The HORUS can be launched by hand or by a catapult; it can also be fired from a 120 mm smooth bore barrel or from a custom launching system.

The HORUS UAV is fitted with movable lifting surfaces, it is characterized by a canard configuration (the wing is located behind the horizontal stabilization surfaces) with forward-swept wing in order to provide high stability and to optimize weight and dimensions of the platform.

The TRP2 is a small, light, tracked Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) platform for use in tactical situations where the human presence is not advisable.

The TRP2 can be disassembled in light-weight independent parts, in order to be easily transported by soldiers on the field, ready for operation in few minutes.

The TRP2 is operated via its own Operator Control Unit (OCU) which can be controlled by a single soldier. This UGV is electric-powered and can achieve a maximum speed of 15km/h.

The OCU is a modular system composed of a joy pad, communication box and ruggedized Personal Computer. It is integrated with the four cameras installed on TRP2 - FOB; the cameras include night vision capability, Pan-Tilt- Zoom (PTZ) and stabilization option in order to provide best Situational Awareness.
