At Eurosatory 2014 Ruukki has presented Ramor 450 best vehicle blast protection on the market.
At Eurosatory 2014, the International Defense & Security Exhibition, Ruukki presents Ramor 450, the latest protection steel for the manufacture of armoured vehicles. The steel can be used as a frame structure or on the floor of the vehicle as a separate shield against mines where it protects against blast or shock waves and shrapnel.

Ramor 450, the latest protection steel from Ruukki, enables manufacture of new types of standard floor structures designed for armoured vehicles.

Ramor 450, the latest protection steel from Ruukki, enables manufacture of new types of standard floor structures designed for armoured vehicles. A lighter, optimised frame structure improves also a vehicle's handling characteristics and enables higher payloads.

"Because of its good cold formability, Ramor 450 provides more options to design the floor structure. Less welds are needed," explains Jani Kastell, Director, Ramor at Ruukki Metals.

Ruukki guarantees the hardness of all its protection steels. However, Ramor 450 is the first to be given a guarantee for mechanical values such as yield and tensile strength, elongation and impact strength. Ramor 450 has a bending radius guarantee of four times its thickness.

Customers who have earlier used Ramor 400 do not need to make any changes in production before using Ramor 450. The steel's uniform quality from one batch to the next is part of product safety.

Applications for Ramor 450 are military and civilian vehicles, such as personnel carriers, minesweeper trucks and security vans where protection is required against the threat of landmines and other explosives.

Ramor steels are the only protection steels on the market made by direct quenching technology and can be up to six times harder than ordinary structural steel. In addition, direct-quenched steels have excellent surface quality and flatness. Direct quenching is faster and more energy efficient than traditional hardening.

Direct quenching is a steel quenching technology developed by Ruukki and has been patented. Ruukki has been using the direct quenching method to make Ramor protection steels since 2006.

Besides new Ramor 450, Ruukki manufactures Ramor 400, Ramor 500 and Ramor 550 protection steels. Ramor 400 protects against high pressures caused by explosions and blasts. Ramor 550 and 500 provide protection from kinetic energy projectiles. Ramor protection steels are available as strip and plate products.
