The
Fahd is a wheeled armoured vehicle personnel carrier manufactured in
Egypt by the local Company Kader Factory to replace old Egyptian armoured
personnel carrier as the BTR-40 or the Egyptian-made Walid. The first
Fahd vehicle was based on the chassis of a German truck Mercedes-Benz
LAP 1117/32 truck (4 × 4) fitted with armour crew cabin and troop's
compartment. The production of the first Fahd began in 1985, with the
first production vehicles being completed in 1986 for the Egyptian Army.
The latest production model is the Fahd 240 which uses the chassis of
the Mercedes-Benz truck LAP 1424/32 4x4 and a powerful Diesel engine.
Currently it is estimated that more than 1000 vehicles Fahd in different
versions are in service in the Egyptian army forces, including 740 Fahd-240
fitted with a Russian-made BMP-2 turret armed with a 30 mm automatic
cannon.

| Design
and protection |
| The
layout of the Fahd-240/30 is similar to a light truck with the
engine at the front, the crew cabin in the middle and the troop's
compartment at the rear. The vehicle is fitted with an armoured
hull which provides a protection for crew and the soldiers against
firing of small arms 7.62 x 54 mm AP rounds and shell splinters.
The troop compartment is at the rear of the hull with the infantry
entering via a door in the rear, the upper part of which folds
upwards and the lower part downwards to form a step. Each side
of the rear door is equipped with vision block and firing ports.
Each side of the hull is fitted with three vision block and
circular firing port in the lower part. The driver and the commander
have a single door that opens to the front with one bullet-proof
window. Two large bullet-proof windows are mounted to the front
of the crew cabin which can be covered by a shutter hinged at
the top. On additional door is mounted to the right side of
the hull. |
| Propulsion |
The
Fahd-240 uses a Mercedes-Benz 4+4 truck chassis LAP 1424/32.
The vehicle is motorized with a Mercedes-Benz Diesel engine
OM 366 LA four-stroke turbocharged diesel developing 240 hp
at 2,600 rpm coupled to a manual transmission. The Fahd-240/30
can run at a maximum road speed of 81 km/h with a maximum cruising
range on road of 700 km. The Fahd can negotiate a maximum vertical
slope of 70% and side slope of 30%. It can cross a trench of
up to 0.8m width and vertical obstacle of 0.5m. The Fahd can
ford a depth of 0.7m without preparation. Two armoured steel
fuel tanks are placed in the bottom of left and right sides
of the vehicle, with enough capacity and fully protection.

| Accessories |
The
Fahd is fitted with a central tyre pressure regulation system
allowing the driver to adjust the tyre pressure to suit the
terrain being crossed. The driver can select front or rear tyres,
or both together. The central tyre pressure system stops automatically
after reaching the maximum or minimum tyre pressure selected
by the driver. Low-pressure, run-flat tyres are fitted as standard
and allow the vehicle to travel a distance of 50 km at 30 km/h
in the event of a puncture. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning
and NBC protection systems. The Fahd-240 is air transportable
by military transport aircraft C-130. The gunner has a day/night
binocular periscopic sight with a day magnification of ×6
and a 10º field of view, and a night magnification of ×5.5
and a 7º field of view, and four day periscopes, three
to the front and one to the rear of the vehicle. An single infra-red
searchlight is mounted coaxially to the right of the 30 mm 2A42
