Saab reveals finalized MSHORAD air defense system

A wide range of established airborne threats such as fighters, helicopters, and missiles are being joined by newer threats such as armed UAVs and loitering munitions. The need to both detect and counter them all, while deploying with speed and mobility, has been at the forefront of Saab’s MSHORAD system development.

Based on RBS 70 NG and Giraffe 1X multi-mission 3D radar respectively, MSHORAD’s vehicle-based Mobile Firing Unit (MFU) and Mobile Radar Unit (MRU), combined with a Saab command and control (C2) system, are designed and available from Saab as its MSHORAD air defence system.

MSHORAD’s rapid mobility provides for a tactical advantage to be exploited on the battlefield or to avoid enemy fires. It delivers a 360°, 75 km situational awareness and the capability to target the most challenging UAV threats thanks to Giraffe’s Drone Tracker, enhanced functionality for low, slow, and small objects. The ability to destroy attackers comes from the unjammable RBS 70 NG missile system that operates at day and night, with rapid reloading in the field. MSHORAD’s ease of integration means customers can choose from a wide range of vehicle types. It also has a dismounted capability such as from atop buildings where it can provide an additional form of operational advantage.

“With the evolved threats, such as the expansion of military UAVs, it’s a great milestone to have a fully working system ready to be offered to our customers. The combination of our first-class range and altitude coverage of the Mobile Firing Unit, together with the small size and multi-role capabilities of Giraffe 1X makes our MSHORAD solution the most modern and state-of-the-art solution out there,” says Mats-Olof Rydberg, head of Marketing and Sales at Saab’s business unit Missile Systems.

Successful system integration and test firings have already been conducted in the last 12 months in cooperation with the Czech company SVOS using their new generation of modular armoured vehicle 4x4 named MARS. Live firing demonstrations will be performed for potential customers in the near future.

The MARS vehicle will be presented to the public for the first time at the Eurosatory in Paris in June this year. Further demonstrations are planned with the MARS vehicle with RBS-70NG, including sharp shootings in Sweden. The MARS vehicle 4x4 is completely manufactured in the Czech Republic and makes extensive use of components already in place in NATO armies. The modular and multi-purpose vehicle MARS (Multi-role ARmored System) exists in a version with a 4x4 axle character in the weight category 14 t, which is available in a wide range of versions, it also counts with a 20 t version with a 6x6 chassis.

General Director of the company Ing. Jaroslav Černý praises the cooperation very much: “The cooperation with the Swedish partner was absolutely exemplary in the whole project. We are very pleased to work with the market leader in anti-aircraft systems. Based on the requirements of several customers, SAAB Dynamics AB has long considered the installation of a 4x4 wheeled armored vehicle, and we are very pleased to have chosen our MARS for this important project. In mutual cooperation, a version of the vehicle was created, which represents a world leader in the field of mobility, protection of the crew against firearms and explosions and, of course, the ability to fight various air targets. Functional and shooting tests in Sweden went as expected and confirmed the top performance of the entire system. I am also very pleased that the specialists of the armed forces of a NATO member country also took part in the project, whose expert proposals helped to finalize the entire project in a form that meets the needs of the modern air force. "

The company SVOS, spol. s.r.o., which is celebrating 30 years of its existence this year, has produced more than 5,000 armored vehicles that reliably and safely serve in the most demanding conditions around the world and their users include a number of countries, including members of NATO or an organization such as the UN or the OSCE.
