Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnow from Poland to deliver 100 ZU-23-2CP 23m anti-aircraft weapons to foreign customer


The Polish company Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów SA has announced a new contract signed on March 19, 2021, for the delivery of 100 ZU-23-2CP 23mm anti-aircraft gun for an undisclosed foreign customer. The entire contract is to be concluded by the end of this year.

Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów is a Polish defense company located in the city of Tarnów, which produces handguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and anti-air guns. It is part of the state-controlled company PGZ (Polish Armaments Group).

The ZU-23-2CP is a modernized version of the Soviet-made ZU-23-2 twin 23 mm towed anti-aircraft gun system, manufactured under license in Poland. The weapon consists of two 2A14 23 mm automatic cannons mounted on a small trailer which can be converted into a stationary mount for firing the guns. The ZU-23-2 can be towed by light tactical vehicles or military trucks.

The carriage of the ZU-23-2 has two rubber-tired road wheels. In firing position, these wheels are raised off the ground and the carriage is supported on three screw-type leveling jacks.

The ZU-23-2CP is used to destroy aerial targets at a maximum range of 2,500 m and an altitude of 1,500 m. The weapon system can be also used against land targets. Feeding is provided from the 50 cartridge belts each, placed in the ammunition boxes mounted on each side of the cannons The weapon must be operated by a squad of five operators: commander, guidance operator, sight operator, right-hand side loader, left-hand side loader.

The cannons of the ZU-23-CP can fire a full range of 23 mm ammunition including Armor-piercing Incendiary with Tracer (API/BZT), High-explosive Incendiary with Tracer (HEI/OFZT), Armor-piercing Discarding Sabot with Tracer (APDS-T), and Frangible Armor-piercing Discarding Sabot with Tracer (FAPDS-T).
