The DTI7 is a short-stroke gas piston powered assault rifle with a separate piston and pushrod and a trifold frame. The short 7-inch barrel makes the DTI7 a Personal Defense Weapon (PDW). The DTI7 can be used as a self-defense weapon for personnel of non-direct combat personnel, such as vehicle crew, artilleryman, medical doctor or medic, and any other personnel involved in close combat during special operations.

The DTI7 assault rifle’s design is different from the NARAC 556 rifle family of Thai NARAC Arms Indutry and Pathumwan Institute of Technology that came out as an Individual Weapon to be used by combat forces, designated MOD 963 rifle family.

NARAC 556, MOD 963 rifle and MOD 963 AR assault rifles, with 20 "and 14.5" barrel respectively, can be equipped with a 40mm grenade launcher, for instance, Defense Studies concludes.
