The AMX-10 RC was manufactured by GIAT for armored reconnaissance purposes. Equipping French cavalry units since 1981, over 240 were still in service with the French Army as of 2021. In addition, 108 units were sold to Morocco and 12 to Qatar. "RC" stands for "Roues-Canon" (meaning "Wheels-Gun") and the vehicle can also be described as a wheeled tank destroyer or light tank. The R ending AMX 10 RCR stands for "Renovated". The AMX-10 RC should not be confused with the AMX-10P; they share automotive components but otherwise have completely different battlefield roles. The AMX-10RC is usually used for reconnaissance missions in dangerous environments or for fire support, a role taken over by the EBRC Jaguar.

The 1st Foreign Cavalry Regiment (French: 1er Régiment Étranger de Cavalerie, 1er REC) is the only cavalry regiment of the Foreign Legion in the French Army. It is one of two armoured cavalry regiments of the 6th Light Armoured Brigade. The regiment is currently divided into 7 squadrons:
* Escadron de Commandement et de Logistique (ECL) – Command and Logistics Squadron.
* 1er Escadron – 1st Squadron (4 combat troops and a command troop)
* 2e Escadron – 2nd Squadron (4 combat troops and a command troop)
* 3e Escadron – 3rd Squadron (4 combat troops and a command troop)
* 5e Escadron – 5th Squadron ( 4 combat troops and a command troop)
* Escadron d'éclairage et d'investigation de brigade (EEI) – Brigade Reconnaissance Squadron. (4 troops)
* Escadron d'Aide à l'Engagement (EAE) – anti-tank squadron
Three squadrons were equipped with the AMX 10 RCR cavalry vehicles, a 6x6 wheeled armoured vehicle armed with a 105mm gun. The EEI is equipped with the Panhard VBL.
