Turkish Company Otokar could exported its new main battle tank ALTAY in Oman.
Turkish Defense Company Otokar made an announcement to the stock exchange after various media reports claimed that ALTAY main battle tank could be exported to Oman. Company confirmed that they placed a bid for a tender in Oman, intended for the procurement of 77 Main Battle Tanks, back in 2013 August.

The bid has been submitted with the consent of SSM, Turkey’s Defense Procurement Body, while the decision for the tender is not expected before 2 years. We believe the announcement from company is important, because it implicitly flags Otokar as the final producer of ALTAY. Therefore, we think this could be perceived as a positive signal and ease the concerns in the market about possible competition for production orders. Note that SSM executives have previously stated that export of local platforms such as ALTAY will be managed by producer companies, rather than SSM.

The ALTAY is the future third generation main battle tank (MBT) for the Turkish army. The first prototypes of Turkey’s main battle tank ALTAY designed and developed by OTOKAR, the biggest privately owned company of the Turkish Defence Industry was unveiled at OTOKAR facilities in Sakarya on November 15th, 2012.

The main armament of ALTAY is a 120 mm 55 caliber smoothbore gun suitable for various kinds of rounds. The Turkish Company MKE was assigned to manufacture the 120 mm 55 caliber Main Armament by technology transfer from Hyundai Rotem of South Korea.

The Turkish Company Roketsan was assigned to develop the Modular Armour Package by technology transfer also through Hyundai Rotem. Roketsan has the responsibility of design and development of ALTAY Turkish main battle tank Armor System.
