Of the total, 27 would replace old vehicles which had been in use for more than eight years and six would replace those damaged in field operations.

Currently, the Thai police use American-made wheeled armored vehicles V-150 commando which was developed in the early 1960s by the Terra-Space division of the Cadillac Gage company.

The spokesman said the new vehicles would also boost the morale of police operating in the southern border provinces.

The vehicles each weigh over a tonne and come with a diesel engine, double cab and four-wheel drive.

The Budget Bureau has told the National Police to use its annual budget to procure the other 177 vehicles.

Police said armoured personnel carriers help reduce casualties and boost the morale of security officials working in the restive South.
