The
FN Herstal deFNder™ Light is a product designed and manufactured
by FN Herstal, worldwide leader in small arms and ammunition for over
a century. FN Herstal is the only weapon manufacturer on the market
that offers the integration of its long-proven weapons onto a remotely
operated weapon station. The light deFNder™ system is the first
in a series of such designs and is easily mounted on vehicles or installed
in a static position to protect sensitive sites such as embassies, military
facilities and secured border environments. When the mission requires
bringing a high volume of accurate fire on target while keeping the
weapon operator safe and secure, the mission calls for the new FN Herstal
deFNder™ Light Weapon Station. Based on reliable and state-of-the-art
technologies, the FN Herstal deFNder™ Light Remotely Operated
Weapon Station has been designed to be used for self-defense missions
when mounted onto light, medium or heavy vehicles, perimeter defense
missions (border control, protection of military compounds, official
buildings, etc.).
FN Herstal is a world leader in small caliber weapons, roots going back
to 1889. FN Herstal guarantees the integration of its machine guns onto
the deFNder™.

The
deFNder™ Light soft recoil mount increases hit probability
and can be configured for a variety of weapons including the
Minimi 5.56, M249, MK 48, Minimi 7.62, M240 and MAG 7.62mm.
Future designs will accommodate the M2 and MK 19 series of belt-fed
automatic weapons. The FN Herstal deFNder™is based on
a modular design. Sight module, ammunition box module and control
handle are customer choice. is designed, developed and qualified
in accordance with MIL-STD-1472, 810, 461, 1275 and MIL-HDBK
217E, Stanag 4370. The FN Herstal deFNder™ fitted with
a MINIMI 5.56 machine gun fully loaded weighs less than 80 kg
and does not exceed 520mm in height in basic configuration.
The FN Herstal deFNder™ features a soft recoil mount that
minimizes shocks and vibrations, hence guaranteeing high hit
probability rate and reduced collateral damage. The standard
day sight provides Narrow and Wide Field of Views for standard
NATO detection, recognition and identification of targets at
high ranges. Various optional sights are available to enhance
further target acquisition under all visibility conditions,
as LLCCD sight or IR thermal sight. |
| Description |
| The
deFNder™ FN Herstal is composed of two major subassemblies,
the first one, is the above deck, with armament module, including
a machine gun up to 7.62 caliber, sight module, ammunition box,
mast with azimuth and elevation actuators, slip ring. The second
part is the below deck, with the operator console including
display for target visualization and engagement and the control
handle for aiming, firing and sight selection. |
| Production
and usage |
Fire
control and weapon management functions include single shot
and adjustable length burst options, fired round counter and
end-of-belt cut-off. The operator interface features a display
console for target identification and engagement, along with
a single handle that controls sight selection, aiming and firing .
The FN Herstal deFNder™ is very high modular weapons station,
and can be fitted with three different FN Herstal's infantry
light and medium infantry weapons machine guns, which can be
used as dismounted weapons as well. The machine guns can be
the Minimi 5.56 x 45 mm (M249), Minimi 7.62 x 51 mm and MAG
7.62 x 51 mm (M240). Replacement of machine guns takes no longer
than a few minutes, with no specific tools required and the
weapon can be removed in less than 15 seconds for use as a dismounted
weapon. The FN Herstal deFNder™ has a unique elevation
angle of +80°. This wide elevation angle is particularly
useful in urban warfare when the weapon operator has to engage
targets located at the
top of high buildings, and during peacekeeping operations where
the FN Herstal deFNder™ shows non-aggressive profile.
The depression for the FN Herstal LRWS is -60°, this feature
is very interesting when the deFNder™ is installed on
observation towers, the weapon operator can engage targets standing
or moving on the ground.
FN Herstal offers total protection to the weapon operator with
its new deFNder™ Light Remote Weapons station, which can
be easily mounted onto low payload vehicles or installed in
a static position. The FN Herstal deFNder™ can be easily
integrated onto all types of low payload vehicles to fulfill
various missions such as, surveillance and observation (reconnaissance),
self-defense, escort or for checkpoint. The FN Herstal deFNder™
can also be installed on observation towers or onto the roof
of buildings to guarantee protection of sensitive buildings,
sites or areas, as embassies or government facilities, military
compounds, prisons or for border control.
