The Spike is in service with the Dutch army since many years, a good opportunity for the Belgian soldiers to take advantage of experience and knowledge of Dutch soldiers. In August 2001, the Dutch Ministry of Defence ordered the Spike-MR (Gill) missile system to replace the Dragon missile of the Royal Netherlands Army and Marine Corps.

The introduction of Spike anti-armour weapon systems will bring about increased interoperability with neighboring Dutch forces which ordered the Spike MR in 2001.

The Belgian Minister of Defence approved December 10, 2012, a budget for the purchase of 66 new anti-tank missile systems for an amount of 41 million Euro. This is the German Company Eurospike that won the contract with its anti-tank and anti-fortifications missile Spike Medium-Range (MR).

EuroSpike GmbH is a joint venture company of Diehl BGT Defence GmbH & Co. KG (Überlingen, Germany), Rheinmetall Defence Electronics GmbH (Bremen, Germany) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. (Haifa, Israel). The company EuroSpike GmbH was formed in Germany to facilitate the selling and the support of the weapon system in Europe.

The Spike missile system is originally manufactured and marketed by the Israeli Company Rafael. SPIKE-MR is lightweight, 4th generation, man-portable missile systems that share many of the same features that combine to meet the challenges presented by enemy forces.

High hit probability against stationary and moving targets is provided by a state-of-the-art CCD / IIR seeker, for operation during the day, at night, and in adverse weather conditions, an advanced tracker and precision guidance system.

The SPIKE-MR operates in Fire and Forget mode with autonomous medium-range target engagement up to 2500m.

SPIKE-MR features a fiber optic data communication link that provides the gunner with the unique ability to attack hidden targets, update or switch to a more valuable target after launch, achieve pinpoint precision, avoid friendly fire, conduct surveillance/damage assessment, and obtain real-time tactical intelligence.
