The upgraded Pantsyr-S2 anti-aircraft missile/gun systems that recently became operational with Russia’s Eastern Military District were involved in drills for the first time, district spokesman Roman Martov told TASS on Thursday.

The upgraded Pantsyr-S2 systems were delivered to the Guards Red Banner Air Defense Missile Regiment based in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East in late February, the spokesman added.

"During the maneuvers, the crews of two Pantsyr-S2 anti-aircraft missile/gun systems performed a 250-kilometer march to the Sergeyevka training range to take part in a comprehensive exercise involving fire control units of the 5th Army," Martov said.

"The maneuvers also involved two motor rifle units. One of the units simulated an attacking side and the other acted on the defensive," he added.

During the exercise, the Pantsyr-S2 anti-aircraft missile/gun systems destroyed flares simulating small aerial targets, Martov said. The maneuvers involved more than 1,000 servicemen.

The Pantsyr-S2 is an upgraded Russian-made self-propelled ground-based anti-aircraft missile/gun system. It is designed to provide close-in air defense for civil and military facilities, including long-range anti-aircraft systems.

The crews learnt to operate the Pantsyr-S2 anti-aircraft gun/missile systems at the Ashuluk training range in the Astrakhan Region in south Russia. After that, the systems went on combat duty. The systems will provide air defense for Vladivostok, the Russian Pacific Fleet’s main base.
