To meet its increasing needs regarding drones operators training and to satisfy its will to innovate to anticipate in this field, the French Air Force has established in 2014 the Drones Centre of Excellence (CED) on SALON-DE-PROVENCE 701 AIR BASE.

CED directed by commander Daniel Gigan has a twofold mission : TRAIN and INNOVATE.

This centre, aggregating French Air Force knowledge and skills in the field, makes it possible, in particular, to innovate in the surveillance of sensible sites.

DCI has several sites in the national territory and abroad and was given a temporary occupation permit in Salon-de-Provence air base to carry out different types of trainings.

In the drones field, CED is in charge of DCI simulator assessment. This tool specified by the CED is designed to anchor training in a theory/simulation/flight educational continuum and puts into practice theoretical training provided by aviators experts in education and simulation.

From a technical point of view, the system is composed of 3 positions: 2 for instructors and one for the _SENSOR OPERATOR_ trainee. This simulator enables to provide a prerequisite training on REAPER DRONE before being sent in operational training.

This simulator has been designed in an open manner. Thus, to mutualise means for other types of drone trainings, Distributed Simulation structure upon which is based this new simulator enables to simulate a mini drone, a tactical drone and of course a Reaper MALE drone. It also enables to interface with a real plane fitted with an optronic pod making the simulator a genuine Drone Ground Station.

This highly reconfigurable simulator can script missions, simulate metrological constraints, multiple mechanical breakdowns and diverse battlefields representative of operational environment, placing the trainee in the best conditions to learn his new trade.
