Cyberspace unit activated by the USMC
The United States Marine Corps has created a new unit to fight the wars in cyber battlefield. During a ceremony at Fort George G. Meade the Marine Corps Cyberspace Warfare Group (MCCYWG) was activated, bringing the Corps well into the cyberspace realm.

MCCYWG’s mission is to man, train and equip Marine Cyberspace teams, to carry out both defensive and offensive cyber missions, supporting the USMC and the Marine Forces Cyberspace Command.

As of the beginning of April, a few Marine cyberspace mission teams have already been operational. Nevertheless, the unit is expected to become fully operational in 2017. The Marine Corps will set up 13 cyber mission teams that will become an integral part of the 133 teams across the US Armed Forces Joint Cyber Command.

Given that the US federal organizations or private companies have been targeted in the past by hackers, it was inevitable for the USMC to expand its operational capabilities.

Col. Ossen J. D’Haiti, commander of the MCCYWG, said: “We’ve always had the means to communicate and the means to protect that communication, but today we’re in an environment where those methods are more and more reliant on a system of transmissions, routers and networks. So, the ability to protect that, the ability to control that and deny an adversary to interdict that, is crucial to command and control. We’re still evolving, but I think five years from now, as the Marine Corps comes online and understands more and more what is happening in this space, the Cyberspace Warfare Group will look much different than it does today”.
