The tests took place at the Prudboi site in the Southern Military District. The new missile can effectively engage targets at a range of up to six kilometers. It has a 90-kg warhead, uses a new thermobaric mixture and has a new motor.

The TOS-1 heavy flame thrower system is a 220mm 30-barrel multiple rocket launcher system which can fire rockets with thermobaric or incendiary warheads. The Russian development of the TOS-1 began in the late 1980s. The TOS-1 enters in service with the Russian army at end of 2000.

The 220mm multipl launch rocket system can be mounted on a T-72 and T-90 main battle tank chassis.

The TOS-1 Buratino multiple rocket launching system carries 30 rockets and TOS-1A Soltsepek has 24.
