The vehicle was developed and designed by the Chinese defence Company Norinco, who is also in charge of the manufacturing.

The CS/SH-1 uses a 4x4 all-terrain chassis with an open-top crew cabin. According to our first analysis, the vehicle can carry a total of 4 four military personnel, who are also the operators for the gun system.

The main armament of the CS/SH-1 is a vehicle-mounted, rifled breech-loading 122mm howitzer/mortar system, which is provided with a vertical sliding breech mechanism. The gun has an elevation range of -4°+80°. The maximum range is 9.5 km when firing the howitzer projectile, 8.5 km when firing the mortar projectile, and 1.2 km when firing the HEAT projectile.

In firing position, the 122mm howitzer is lowered at the rear of the vehicle and two spades are anchored in the ground to increase the stability of the system.

In road position, the 122mm howitzer is mounted at the rear of the vehicle, with the gun stored in the center of the vehicle. The ammunition boxes are stored at the rear of the vehicle.
