IDEX 2017: AM General LLC unveils new 4x4 Multi-Purpose platform
At IDEX 2017, AM General LLC has unveiled a new member of its well-known family of multipurpose armoured trucks. The Multi-Purpose Truck (MPT) is a commercial base 4x4 platform chassis truck (cab and chassis) with 8,391 kg (18,500 lb) GVW and 2,359 kg (5,200 lb) payload capacity engineered to serve the extreme-environment needs of energy, mining, industrial, and government customers around the world.

The MPT is engineered and designed based on existing and test proven AM General components, Off- the-Shelf (OTS) AM General items, Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) items from other commercial vehicles, and Military Commercial Off-the-Shelf (M-COTS) items.

The MPT base platform utilizes an eight cylinder, 6.5L, electronic turbo diesel engine that produces 250 hp and 550 lb of torque. An electronic-controlled 6-speed Allison® automatic transmission and 2-speed mechanical shift transfer case drive independent axles with geared hubs.

The MPT utilizes a front and rear independent suspension module, which improves mobility and adaptability while providing higher ground clearance and the extra wheel travel needed in all-terrain conditions. An anti-lock braking system (ABS) with 4-wheel inboard mounted disc brakes is standard.

The MPT’s electrical system utilizes a dual voltage (12 & 24 volt) system designed to meet the power requirements of the vehicle and a range of power demands for special purpose modules while providing reliable performance in harsh operating environments. The charging system includes a 400-amp alternator and external solid state voltage regulator. Solid state modules are used for circuit protection in place of traditional circuit breakers and relays. The solid state modules provide the ability to control electrical loads with software and provide enhanced fault detection diagnostics.

The MPT’s 346.2 cm (136.3 in.) wheelbase open chassis is designed to accept a variety of special purpose bodies/ modules including an ambulance body, wrecker body, crew transport body, flatbed transport body, communication body, cargo carrying body, and tactical configurations that attach to the base MPT frame at predefined mounting locations.

The MPT was designed to allow customers to configure payload modules based on their needs. The Cab & Chassis Base Platform is the base vehicle configuration. MPT modules can be developed by the purchasing country’s engineering experts or, if needed, by AM General engineers. Modules can include several applicable configurations utilizing a 2-man cab. Other variants include the 2-man w/ Flat Bed, 2 + 6 Personnel Carrier, 4-man Base w/ Cargo box, and 9 Crew Capacity Vehicle.

The MPT 2 + 6 Personnel Carrier concept seats a crew of six. The module has a rear access door articulated by a powered mechanical unit. Additional internal components can be configured to include specialized seating, intercom headsets (hanging), RWS controls, and radios.

The MPT has a high mobility suspension system with independent double “A” arms, open end coil springs, and hydraulic shock absorbers. The suspension system is characterized as a passive system with load setting capability on the rear (load leveling). The springing and damping properties of suspension components (springs, shocks and control arms) are static and derived from constant force-displacement and force-velocity curves. In addition, the wheel and tire design provides traction for mobility and control through the complete range of vehicle loading conditions, while absorbing shocks and vibrations from the operational terrain.

The MPT 2 + 6 Personnel Carrier offers the customer the ability to design a highly survivable module based utilizing the MPT payload capacity. The MPT provides a multi-purpose platform capable of integrating a multitude of modules, weapons and additional internal components.
